A trip code is a hashed version of a password used as a type of "signature" on the Internet. On message boards, image boards, and Internet forums, trip codes allow users to establish a unique identity in a discussion while maintaining a level of anonymity. Essentially, they associate posts or messages with a consistent user while not revealing information about them, such as their IP (Internet Protocol) or e-mail address.

An example of where trip codes are used is in places where user registration is not required or is intentionally kept to a minimum, like 4chan.

How are trip codes made?

To create a trip code, a user enters a string of characters after their name or pseudonym when posting on a message board. The string is then processed by the forum's software, usually with a cryptographic algorithm, to generate a unique identifier. This output is often displayed as different characters following a bang (!) or another delimiter.
