    hiding program files from search
    « on: June 17, 2007, 08:13:59 AM »
So I was just wondering, how do I hide program files from the search in windows? Like, I installed a game and downloaded, whatever, and now I want to hide the game files from the search in windows. I want to still be able to play the game though without having to do anything. I want to be able to open it and play it normally but I don't want it to be able to be found using the search. So if anyone knows if its possible and greatly how it can be done it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

My other thread is of different. It was hiding the game's name from the "add/remove programs" but now I want to hide the actual game's files (the files you download, usually stored in "program files") from the "search".
The other thread had nothing to do with hiding from search. It was only hiding the name for the game from the add/remove.

You can mark them as hidden, which will hide them as long as the option to search hidden files is not checked.
It will still be obvious anyway, however you get to it to play it, surely "they", the people you are hiding it form, will be able to see it that way.

Wouldn't just renaming it to $* help if your using windows (or is this only for sharing?)
But I don't know if you would be able to play the game and I don't know how you can open the map after you did that.
        DO NOT DO THIS!!!
I just wanted to know if it is possible.
I don't have the b***s to try it.
I hoping that you can tell me sow I don't have to try it  ;D

patio: I don't know what exactly you mean by "We are still wondering whose machine this is..." but from what I'm guessing, no I'm not trying to hide a virus on someone's computer, I just want to play a game without my parents really finding out because they don't like the game because they saw a nazi symbol as someone's clan name. I'm just trying to play a game without being caught. Please help me out. I assure you all I am not trying to hide a virus or the sort. I know I sure hate viruses and I think everyone else does also.

Jonas: I won't be trying that lol. I'm looking for a sure way to hide it and I doubt it will work because the installed game only accesses the folder names that it was installed as so changing the names would most likely result in it not accessing it.

Sorry In my languisch a map is a folder so..
and I know there are Maps in Englisch to but those are otherones the ones you showed.
sorry that I somtimes talk in my langusich But a MAP = Folder
If I do this again you 'll know it know But I 'll try to check sow that I don't use maps again.

Its not because you aren't using it for that purpose that someone else who reads this wouldn't.
But there are Virus scanners for.By the way viruses are always hidden but You can't hide something for a virus scanner (if it is a good one). sow if you're able to hide it.
The chance exists that your parents may see it when its scanned by your virus scanner; because the most scanners are showing the URL of what they are scanning.

Don't worry about it, now I will know what you mean in future. In English, we call foreign words like that "false friends". Like the word "pain" which means one thing in English and another in French.

Kk, makes sense to me about how other people may use it. Is there anyway someone can tell me though? Or if it was already mentioned, can someone give me a direct answer? And thanks alot for all the responses. And I'm not more worried about the virus scanner. My parents usually just leave it on a virus scan since it takes awhile and they leave the computer. Just worried they might look up "game" or "online" since the online games they don't like anymore.  Thanks once again everyone =)

Why not just get permission for the game from them ? ?

If it is their machine you have to respect the limitations they place on you/the machine...

No fun i know but one of the realities of growing up.
