Not sure excatly why this keeps happening
« on: June 01, 2009, 10:46:49 PM »
I'm trying to put this in my Myspace site in my Blog, and it keeps  parts of it when I hit save.
See it says to Copy and Paste this HTML to embed in your Website-
Here is what it's suppose to be-
<iframe width="425" height="240" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,21.52,,0,4.68&amp;cbll=35.132245,-89.968586&amp;v=1&amp;panoid=&amp;gl=us&amp;hl=en"></iframe>
<small><a id="cbembedlink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?cbp=12,21.52,,0,4.68&cbll=35.132245,-89.968586&ll=35.132245,-89.968586&layer=c" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map[/url]</small>

When I hit save it changes it to this-
<[[iframe]] width="425" height="240" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,21.52,,0,4.68&cbll=35.132245,-89.968586&v=1&panoid=&gl=us&hl=en" mce_src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,21.52,,0,4.68&cbll=35.132245,-89.968586&v=1&panoid=&gl=us&hl=en" mce_src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,21.52,,0,4.68&cbll=35.132245,-89.968586&v=1&panoid=&gl=us&hl=en">..

Is the IFRAME tag accepted by MySpace?  I suspect not.
Only able to visit the forums sporadically, sorry.

I don't know. How would I find out?
Any reason why it wouldn't be supported? I don't understand all that kind of stuff about things not being supported.

one reason they wouldn't support it would be because it is often used to insert malware; for example, some prankster could comment on a myspace page and insert a Iframe that points to a malware distribution site. Things go downhill from there.

Could someone please help me with figuring out how to put this up on my site?
Also, thank you for explaining this to me, because I would like to learn more about if this is why sometimes things get erased whenever someone inserts comments on my site. I've had my whole page erased at times and I don't understand all that stuff.
Really confusing about all the code stuff.
I understand a good bit about making websites, but I don't understand why stuff like this doesn't work right.

Is it a full map you want on your site or just an image?

Just the picture of the house that my Grandparents lived in. I found it on Google maps thing and that is the code it gave for adding to sites.

It would work if you had your own website....

Anyway, go here, turn the view to the house you want, then click the icon in the top right corner. You can then follow this guide on taking a screenshot of the image and uploading it to a hoster, then adding to your page the same way you would add an image to this forum.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean about I don't have my own website. This is my myspace site that I'm adding it to. I login by entering in my username and password.
Is there something I'm not understanding here about websites?
I also have been creating sites on Facebook, Angelfire, Geocities, also now trying Bellsouth stuff out too since they are our ISP they give us same type of stuff as Myspace and other things like that.

I also clicked on the top corner and it seems to just switch it to full view when I click the icon. It doesn't seem to bring up any guide.

MySpace by definition isn't a "website".

Amy...I hope the info I gave you in chat worked...

Whatever it was, if it didn't work, just take a screenshot of what you want and upload to a file hoster.

Ok, now I'm really confused then on what a website is. A website is stuff you see on the internet? A site that has pictures, text, links, all that stuff on it? If myspace is not a website, then what is it then? You type in www.myspace.com and then login same as any other site you go to and login with username and password and then upload your photos or other files.
Yes, I got it to work, I uploaded my file to my myspace site.

Myspace restricts what you can and can not put on the site. It may be "yours" in your own mind, but the entire site is owned by Myspace (or whatever company or person owns it), including all pictures or text.

But why do they allow us to upload our pictures and put whatever text and stuff and customize any layouts and stuff, templates and stuff? I guess I still don't understand then what a website is then. Also, aren't all websites owned by someone in a way though?
Stuff we put on it the pictures, text, no matter whether we created it on myspace or any other site.

If you have purchased the domain name, like WWW.EXAMPLE.COM , you own that domain until it expires. Anything on a free web host (or a myspace page), are owned by the site owners (although they probably wouldn't take it, they're getting enough money from people paying them for no advertising, and the advertising).

So, is everyone's website at www.example.com? I don't know if I understand what you mean by that.
What about my site on like Bellsouth since we are paying for our Internet and all through them?
Or on Webkinz I'm designing things on there, I had to buy a pet and all though.
Of course I guess I really don't care since I'm not doing this for a job or anything. Only doing it for a hobby due to my health I'll most likely not ever be able to get a job, so I wouldn't want to keep having to buy the website anyways.

If you buy a website, like www.example.com , you own it until it expires. People buy their own websites, then they have a website like www.abc.com . On their own website, they can put pages on it. Your myspace is just a page on MySpace.com , but is not an actual SITE, it is a PAGE. (It's a bit confusing, so I don't blame you if you don't understand at first)

No, not everyone's website is www.example.com. What they are trying to say is that it would be better if you had you own website, then you would be able to control your content and choose what you could put up on your website, if you have a Myspace account you would have to abide by their rules and limitations, like not being able to use the IFRAME tag. Anyway you just follow kpac's link for your original question.

Another reason I'd like to understand this stuff better is so I can keep from being hacked and or get viruses and spyware by not going to dangerous websites.
So I guess do I not need to worry if I'm at someones myspace site or some other site similar to myspace with the rules to abide to?
Anyways, I thought that everything on the internet is considered a website since you have to use a web browser to access the sites, and I've read the definition on sites like wikipedia and thought I understood what a website is.  Here is some of what they say it is-
A website (or web site) is a collection of related web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that are addressed with a common domain name or IP address in an Internet Protocol-based network. A web site is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via the Internet or a private local area network.A web page is a document, typically written in plain text interspersed with formatting instructions of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML). A web page may incorporate elements from other web sites with suitable markup anchors.

I guess my site on Bellsouth maybe considered a website since it expires and so does my account on Webkinz and Kookeys expires too? See myspace does allow like html and css stuff like that, which makes it even more confusing.

Oh and I did get the picture to work. Thanks again for help with it.

Oh and guess what, I put some links to your sites in my blog too.
If anyone else has a website, let me know so I can add it. One of the things I enjoy doing is surfing the net and then writing about/making a page of all the different sites I've been too.

when you add content to a myspace page- your not creating your own website- your "personalizing" your myspace profile. Same with Facebook, and any number of other social networking sites. What your doing, is adding content to somebody elses website- when you add content to your myspace page, it doesn't save HTML documents- it stores your entries in it's database, along with everyone elses.

IMO- you administer a web-site when you are in sole control of the files that make it up. in the case of myspace, myspace (as you've discovered) changes your HTML code and removes elements from it. I'm not familar with the other two you mentioned but I can assure you they are not "websites" in anything but a extremely loose definition.

Quote
I also have been creating sites on Facebook, Angelfire, Geocities, also now trying Bellsouth stuff out too since they are our ISP they give us same type of stuff as Myspace and other things like that.

"AngelFire" and "geocities" are free web hosts. your in complete control of the content of your site. Facebook... is just a profile. In the same sense we could call our profile on CH a our website, which seems a bit silly.

Couldn't say about the ISP. most ISP's will give you server space, but you'll need to pay to register a proper domain name. (otherwise, for example, you might end up with something like www.mywebsite.BellSouth.com, which isn't really that bad).

It's possible to "host" a web site from your own PC, with, for example, IIS server. However, the only way anybody can access it is through your IP address, for example people would need to type in "http://64.96.12.127" in their browser. It becomes a more convenient name, (www.mysite.com) when you register the domain name, and pay for it. This will tell a local DNS server about your page- it now knows that when somebody asks for www.mysite.com, it should tell them the IP address is 64.96.12.127. Most DNS servers are intertwined, so after a while other DNS servers will add this information to their database.

We can put html stuff in our emails. I do actually have to sign into myspace using my email address, not the myspace email, but my bellsouth one.

On Webkinz and Kookeys we can do stuff like turn off the ads and stuff if we want to on the site.
On this other site I go to, only way to turn off ads is pay for an account. Which I paid for account on Webkinz and Kookeys by getting a pet and the account stuff comes with it and the space on the site to do everything. To keep things going we have to buy another pets before the expiration date it gives us for our account.
Yes, on my bellsouth site there is a content and layout section, edit account, so many other stuff. We can add a chatroom, guestbooks, anything we want.

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions. Just want to make sure I'm not misunderstanding anything with the definitions of things, also how is the words suppose to be written. I see so many different things- Is it together website or a space in between web and site? Also same with webpage? Is it web page? Also homepage too I keep sometimes getting a little mixed up all those terms seem so similar.

The only other reason I'm trying to find out too what is going on is wasn't sure if I'm maybe accidently hitting something to cause things to change or have a setting wrong somewhere that is causing things to change too. Since we also keep getting hacked and problems with viruses and spyware which I understand can do that stuff too. Last time I tried using notepad on my computer just to take some notes, someone was somehow typing over all my stuff and all these little dots..... kept appearing on the screen.
Not just with the computer, but also like with DVD's and stuff I keep having weird things happening with them and stuff erasing with them too and accidently hitting stuff I'm not sure what I accidently hit and how to fix things.
I had some setting wrong in my Microsoft Word recently too that someone on here helped me fix something that was causing things to appear in all blue.
Also, right before my health got worse and is still not doing well, one thing that keeps happening causing my memory to not be to good anymore and me to forget everything, I was trying to help out my sister and her husband with their site for his new job. I kept having problems with crashing my computer and other similar weird things same as I just noticed on myspace and they are paying for theirs. So, not sure if there is a little something I'm not understanding or like I said, some setting causing things. I mostly just open my browser and then click new page after I login to where ever it is.
I'm also noticing it seems Microsoft Word and other things can create things too, and still not too sure if this is ok? Some places I read seem to say stuff I don't know if I understand what they mean about it adding stuff to the pages? Currently my nephew who  is an Accountant is having to take a web design class and they are using Microsoft Word and when I asked him if he heard of CSS, he hasn't heard of it either. Plus now is looking like, did I sign up for the wrong class years ago too when I took this Computer Concepts and Applications class. We did webpages in it, but also used like Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, stuff like that and had to save it as a webpage and webpage preview stuff. It had templates, layouts we choose from.
The only other thing too since I'm not doing web pages for a job, only for a hobby. I just want to be able to share pictures I have with others is the only reason, then I also like to decorate things too. So, it feels enough to me, I get to change things like the colors of things and myspace and other things like that do allow me to choose from so many different backgrounds and stuff. Plus since I love helping people, I like to put links to other people's sites on mine to help them out.

The only other little thing too I get a bit mixed up on is the tags thing. Like what brackets to use. Sometimes I see [] then sometimes I see things typed out in between () or <> {}

<> is used for HTML tags, examples:
Code: [Select]
<html>, <body>, <div>, <b>, <head>

[] is used for BBCode tags (on forums like this), examples:
Code: [Select]
[b], [i], [url], [img], [u]

Currently my nephew who  is an Accountant is having to take a web design class and they are using Microsoft Word and when I asked him if he heard of CSS, he hasn't heard of it either.
CSS is a technique used in designing websites.  It is not a feature of Microsoft Word, as far as word processing is concerned.

Currently my nephew  Plus now is looking like, did I sign up for the wrong class years ago too when I took this Computer Concepts and Applications class. We did webpages in it, but also used like Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, stuff like that and had to save it as a webpage and webpage preview stuff. It had templates, layouts we choose from.
Yes, Word and PowerPoint have the option to save documents as web pages but they put a lot of extra code in the web page file that isn't needed.  This makes them a poor choice for creating web pages.

Using website as one word has become commonly accepted.  Similarly, dictionary.com shows webpage or Web page as both being acceptable, and likewise for homepage or home page, although it seems to indicate home page as perhaps being the more acceptable use for that case.

What I don't understand, why then do the classes have us use stuff like Microsoft Word if it isn't a good choice to use?
What do you mean too about it adding extra coding?

Does CSS stand for Cascading Style Sheets?
Microsoft Word has the help feature and I typed in CSS and here is a bit of what comes up-
About attaching cascading style sheets
You can use Microsoft Word to attach, remove, and manage cascading style sheets (CSS) for Web pages. Cascading style sheets provide a convenient way to format several Web pages or a whole Web site. To change the format of the pages, you can make changes to the style sheet without having to edit each Web page.
You can use Word to attach more than one style sheet. For example, you might have a style sheet that's part of a large Web site, such as one for a university, and then another style sheet that defines a smaller group of related pages, such as one for a department within the university.
You can also determine which style sheet takes precedence over another, in case conflicting styles are defined for the same elements.
When you attach a style sheet to your Web page in Word, the styles will appear in the Styles and Formatting task pane.

Then it also has other stuff too to read about how to attatch a cascading style sheet, detach a cascading style sheet, change the order of cascading style sheets, so many other things.

What do you mean too about it adding extra coding?
When you save a html file via word (or any office program that can save as html), it adds virtually useless header coding saying that the page was created with word (or the office program of your choice).

Sorry, but I still have no idea what you mean by it adding heading? I don't seem to see what it's adding. I see what I type out and don't seem to see any of that. Isn't a header the same thing as a title too?
That's all I see whenever I view things created, so I guess I must not be understanding this.
I thought everything on the computer was considered Office programs.

Also, do you need a client in order to view websites? That's another thing I don't know if I understand. See whenever I have problems with the internet, and I go in chatroom on Bellsouth and they ask me what client. I didn't think you could view websites through Outlook Express. So, I never know how to answer them. and then they say stuff too about headers too, like when I'm having problems with my emails they says something about including the originating IP address and stuff like that in the message headers. Is that what you mean about headers in Office programs?

Office programs always add that header junk to html files, but if you use a specific program for making HTML files (like Dreamweaver), then it probably won't.

Dreamweaver does, but not so much. really, office adds it, because it is sort of trying to use HTML to "replace" DOC, so you can open/save etc just an HTML file. word 97 could export to HTML, I think, but not save as HTML. that was a good balance.

I don't ever get the long list you typed out. Maybe it's a different version you all have than me of Microsoft Word? The only other thing I can think of, I was looking around in the help section of Word and there is something called Filterd Html, here is what is it says and I decided to try some things and see if I can figure out what you are talking about. Also, are you talking about when you hit view source in the browser, it shows all this stuff? Here is what it shows if you save it as filter html, and it doesn't show all the list you have, and here is what it says too about saving in filter html

Reduce Web page size by filtering HTML
This feature is only recommended for experienced Web authors who are concerned about the tags that appear in their HTML files.

When possible, you should only save a Web page in filtered HTML when you're finished editing it in Microsoft Word.

On the File menu, click Save As.
If you have not saved the file before, enter a new name for the file in the File box.
In the Save as Type box, click Web Page, Filtered.
Click Save.
Here is the code it gives me:
<head>
<meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 10 (filtered)">
<title>Testing this out </title>
<style>
<!--

 p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal
   {margin:0in;
   margin-bottom:.0001pt;
   font-size:12.0pt;
   font-family:"Times New Roman";}
@page Section1
   {size:8.5in 11.0in;
   margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in;}
div.Section1
   {page:Section1;}
-->
</style>
</head>
<body lang=EN-US>
<div class=Section1>
<p class=MsoNormal>Testing this out </p>
</div>
</body>
</html>

That example of code isn't too bad actually.

These parts, though, aren't needed:
Code: [Select]
<meta name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 10 (filtered)">
Code: [Select]
<style>
<!--
 /* Style Definitions */
 p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal
   {margin:0in;
   margin-bottom:.0001pt;
   font-size:12.0pt;
   font-family:"Times New Roman";}
@page Section1
   {size:8.5in 11.0in;
   margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in;}
div.Section1
   {page:Section1;}
-->
</style>
Code: [Select]
lang=EN-US
....and they add loading time to the page, especially for people with slow internet connections. Also:

Code: [Select]
<meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
windows-1252 is not really a good charset to be using, but it doesn't matter really.

Word also seems to use inches for dimensions which is very....."old".

This is making me even more confused on what to think about the correct things to use and stuff for creating websites.
My very first website was on Jonathan Taylor Thomas at Angelfire in like 1995. Before getting a scanner to where I could scan pictures I have, I started off by just trying to see if I could figure out how to do links correctly. So, I made a page that is links to other Jonathan sites. So, I login to my account at Angelfire and do the editing with the tools and all they give for selecting colors and stuff for size of fonts, stuff like that. That was before I took a class that had us use all those Office programs I mentioned.
I also of course keep having so many problems due to hacking too, and have had to redo things too because of that.

Anyways, another thing too is that right before my health got worse, and see stress makes it worse too. I was trying to help my sister and her husband on a site for his new job, for free too since I enjoy helping others out. It helps me feel good being able to help others out. My only other issue at times is with alignment things I get mixed up on. Plus I also kept having problems with my computer crashing and freezing up too everytime I try and get to where we login to work on the site. So, anyways, I had been to this other html help site trying to get a little help and then someone says something about missing some things and something about not using tables anymore. Plus then they mention something about CSS, which I'm still trying to figure out what it means. We had everything working just fine with just Html too, and now they are paying someone to do the site for them. Which the thing I don't understand if I hit view source, it seems there are tables on the site. It says the word table in between the two brackets <table>. Here is the site and you can see what I mean about it says table http://www.astresurfacing.com/
I also had alot less codes on my sites too and then someone added like all the stuff you now took away.

Here is a page http://www.geocities.com/amymusicfan/claypics.htmlof what I did, and here http://www.geocities.com/amymusicfan/tryingthisclay.htmlis something someone told me I need to do instead.

The only other thing I keep trying to understand, is when I read something else in this Office 03 book I have it makes it sound like we don't want to use Html and have the settings somehow set to not view content. Here is what it says that is confusing and is under Enhanced privacy features- Messages in HTML format often include pictures or sounds. Sometimes the pictures and sounds aren't included in the message itself but downloaded from a Web server when the e-mail message is opened or previewed. Then it talks about junk email senders use this capability by including a Web beacon in the message.

Plus I don't understand how you can use Notepad for a website. Doesn't seem to have much features like, how do you add images and stuff like that, and it wont allow me to change the fonts or colors. Just allows you to use 1 font for the entire page.
I've also had things getting changed on me, not just in Myspace, stuff not even for a website, but just notes I take on things using Wordpad and Notepad. I have this one file I created using Wordpad, and somehow it's all messed up and showing all these strange symbols and stuff all over the page. Same with last time I tried to use Notepad somehow things were getting erased and some strange message like someone was writing to a judge or something because it started saying your honor in the message, and other things too plus alot of dots across the screen.........
So, I don't understand if there is some setting somewhere doing this stuff or I guess someone is hacking through doing this?

The other thing, I don't have much energy to type for a long time, so using the Office software and all helps alot with things and I still feel like I'm able to create things. It has the choices you can choose from like for colors and stuff like that. I also run into alot of problems with like typing in the brackets causes me more pain and stuff if I try to type the codes out myself like<html></html>.
I don't really know if I understand some of the things too you said about the charest thing? What is that mean? Doesn't Outlook Express also add those codes if your sending emails and stuff?

Oh one more question, what is a url? I thought I knew what one was, but maybe I don't know. Isn't it the same thing as a link to a website? Someone told me I have the wrong url. Like if someone asked me what is the url for ComputerHope, isn't it www.computerhope.com

Thanks,
Amy

Hi Amy,

Way back in the days I first got started in web design, someone told me just to "view the source" of other web pages and use that as the basis of my own web pages.  I suggest you try this.  Click the "View" menu on your browser and then whatever option says something about "source" (varies between browsers).  You'll see that a web page is in fact made up mostly of HTML code.

For example, you might see this on a web site:

Quote
some text in bold

but in fact the underlying code is like this:

Code: [Select]
some text <b>in bold</b>
The "<b>" is an HTML 'tag' that tells the browser where to start putting text in bold, and the "</b>" is the tag that tells the browser where to stop.  All browsers work this way - they read in so-called 'plain text' and translate it into fancy formatting.

Another example - where you see an image on a page, the underlying code will be something like this:

Code: [Select]
<img src='/path/to/image.gif' />
and instead of displaying that as text, the browser knows to go off and find the image and display that instead.

You are right about URLs.  They take the form "http://website.domain".  The "website.domain" bit tells the browser where to go, and the "http://" bit tells the browser what to do when it gets there - in this case to speak in the language of the web, Hypertext Transfer Protocol.

Does this help?  The best way to learn how web pages are made up is (in my view) to compose them in plain text - this is why Notepad is good enough for the job.  A fully featured web coding program is better, but might be overwhelming at first.  I would start with Notepad, read some HTML tutorials and work your way up.
Only able to visit the forums sporadically, sorry.

Hi Rob and everyone else too,
How are you all doing today?
Before I start writing, just thought I'd clear up any misunderstandings too. Are you all thinking I'm just now beginning to create websites? I created my very first website back in 1995/1996 I think.
That is actually the exact same things I did too back when I created my first website, hitting the view source thing. I sort of figured that what we are seeing at the top of the pages must be in that order from top to bottom. Also, yes, I did go all around looking at all the html tutorials I could find and printed them off to read them. Noticed how they have like the title of the site surrounded by the title tags <title>The title of the site here</title>.
Yes, I've been using like
Code: [Select]
<b></b> to bold things. But the only other thing is that sometimes I notice other brackets around them like
Code: [Select]
[b][/b]Things like Microsoft Word, and all these other programs and the thing here too has buttons to press to do bold, italics, all that stuff that I noticed you typed out in the thing. Which seems easier to just use those things because I don't see anything much in Notepad for doing that stuff, and same with adding pictures to the page. They have something to click on in order to insert an image.
When I go to login to like where we do the webpages, it seems to not have Notepad there, like when I login to Geocities, and other places out there, same thing with the place my sister and her husband got their site from Imhosting I thing maybe was the name of the company and they seem to have Microsoft Word I think or maybe it was called WYSIWYG eiditor. It was similar functions to Microsoft Word. nothing to click on that says notepad.
Plus like I still don't understand why in the web design classes, why do they have us use all these programs for doing the pages if not a good thing to do. Seems a waste of time and money too to sign up for the class if it's not going to teach us the correct things.

also same for the image thing sometimes I'm now seeing the img thing written outside of brackets img like this
img,table{border:0}

About the only thing that I still have problems with is alignment issues, and then someone at this other site said something about not using tables. How else do you split things up into columns or rows? I tried looking all over the place and tried so many other ways, and haven't got anything to work right. Plus I see tables all over every site it seems like. So, I thought that was something I needed to learn to do. The same with frames. The other thing I'm trying to still figure out is if I need any CSS files. I've got so many different answers as to whether or not this is necessary. I've got things showing up just fine with what I thought was html. I tried making a css file and when I tried it said it's invalid file name.
Here is my very first site though if you want to see it- http://www.angelfire.com/fl/JTT99/
Here is a movie site I've got- http://www.geocities.com/amylovesmovies/
Another movie site I have- http://www.geocities.com/moviefan756/
Which then you will see how I do things and why I have tables to divide things up.

The other thing too, always with anything in life I try to do, even after reading the tutorials, I still need to ask questions on things I'm not quite understanding all the way. I do have some learning disabilities though that make everything more challenging for me to understand sometimes mostly with reading comprehension and vocabulary. I'm also slower too with things. Which since I'm classified as disabled student, I get to have as much time as I need with tests. I've never been able to pass the reading portion of any of those standarized tests. I think more now due to vocabulary is causing me to miss the questions. Which passing the test is one of my main goals in life to one day pass that section. I did great in the math sections though. My scores are high enough to take things like Calculus.

Also, since this past August/September my health has been getting worse. One of the symptoms I keep having is memory and confusion problems being really bad. Still not doing well, so having to relearn and review daily too so I don't forget things which I'm really scared that will happen with what has been going on. My health also makes it hard for me to type for long too, which is sort of another reason why typing out is harder for me.
Just one other thing about the images, I thought you have to upload them somewhere first? Like to the filemanager or whereever you are doing the site at? Isn't that right?
So, like the path to the image if you upload it to like photobucket, or geocities, isn't it the thing you see in the address bar?
So then you put <img src="whatever the url it says is what you put here?"/>
Also, seems like if I put just like <img src="jtt.jpg"> that seems to work too?
See I also have pictures just saved to the My Pictures folder on the computer. Would that then be the path? Like if I go in the My Pictures folder, I see like memphis.JPG under the name of the photo.

Take Care,
Amy

Notepad doesn't have these features - you have to type out all the page's code (the code you see when you view the Page Source). Though harder to do this way, it is the best way to do it.

Quote
maybe it was called WYSIWYG eiditor.
Just so you know, a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor is like Word. Notepad is not, because you cannot see the changes you make instantly appear.

I don't know about this. Maybe you should try talking to the instructor about it?

Quote

This is where you're getting confused. That bit of code is actually CSS. That code means that all images and tables on the page should have no borders.

Quote

The "new" (and better) way is to use DIV tags. That person shouldn't have really said anything about it, though, as it really isn't necessary to not use tables. It's only an issue with future browser compatibility.

Quote

Not needed unless you want them, which you probably don't.

Also, seems like if I put just like <img src="jtt.jpg"> that seems to work too?
This only works if the image is in the same folder as the page you are looking at.

Quote
See I also have pictures just saved to the My Pictures folder on the computer. Would that then be the path? Like if I go in the My Pictures folder, I see like memphis.JPG under the name of the photo.
Obviously the file would have to be uploaded somewhere on the Web, first.

Sorry if I'm writing again so quick. Thought of a couple things I wanted to add, oh and guess what, Rob, I put a link for your site on my myspace page/site whatever you want to call it. Under the blog enteries is where I put it in the part that talks about Computer help sites, and other things like that is what the title of the entry is. Here is the url, and do you all have a myspace site at all? www.myspace.com/jttandryanfan

Also, here is what my book says that I have for the class I had taken. It says about using a web page authoring site and management program. Says that you can create and edit Web pages without knowing Hypertext Markup Language(HTML), view the pages and files in the Web site and control their organization, manage existing web sites, import and export files, and diagnose and correct problems.
Then it goes on to talk about templates too.
Which that is what I have with Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, all these templates, plus then sometimes I start with changing the background color, stuff like that I enjoy doing. Word and those other things seem to also have a view source thing too I noticed.
I actually have a few slide shows I made with PowerPoint, only thing I keep trying to figure out about that is a good place to put it where anyone who wants to can view it for free anytime they want.

Take Care,
Amy

Yes, that would be possible to do. It probably wouldn't work to just embed them into a webpage, as the person viewing it mightn't have PowerPoint installed on their computer, so it wouldn't work. I'm sure you could convert the slideshow though.

Well, this just makes me want to quit everything. Just getting so much more confusing.
Some of the stuff you helped clear up a little on the CSS thing. Looks like maybe I have been doing CSS and not even realizing it.
When I make the tables, it has the different things you can select for it like if you want borders, and all the other stuff like that.
Before taking the classes like I mentioned, I started creating sites. One big thing I did learn too was to make my images smaller. That was about the only things people told me about that I figured out how to do correct too.
Oh and just now thought I'd see if maybe someone I know who is a computer programmer could look at some of my sites and help clear up any confusion. He said nothing at all is wrong with my codes and if anyone says anything about it doesn't know what they are talking about.
All this stress and confusion started mostly back this past August/September when trying to help out my sister and her husband with the site for free too for his new job. The only thing I was trying to get help on is a little something with alignment in the tables, and someone said about not using tables anymore. I've been trying to figure out if it's against the law to use tables. Which with my health getting worse due to the stress and everything too, they have had to pay someone now to do the site. Anyways, I noticed they put tables on the site.
Thank you so much everyone though for trying the best and stuff to help clear things up for me too. Sorry too if some of it I maybe a little confused about at first.
I'm not exactly sure how to change the preferences to public. I thought it already was marked as public. I'll have to see if my nephew can help me with this since he uses Myspace too. Of course he just left to go to Mexico with his church to help out with mission stuff.

No, it's not against the law. Most websites use tables somewhere. Tables are easier to use than the "proper" way, so there is less work in using tables.

Well, this just makes me want to quit everything. Just getting so much more confusing.

I'm very sorry it's having that effect on you Amy.

Where I'm coming from is getting back to first principles with web design.  There are fundamentally two different types of web designer: the graphic designers, who tend to be good at look and feel but not great on code, and the programmers, who tend to be good on coding and standards compliance, but not great with graphics.  I fall into the latter camp, so my comments should be read accordingly.

As kpac said, I couldn't access your blog, but feel free to add me:  myspace.com/robpomeroy

Some of the stuff you helped clear up a little on the CSS thing. Looks like maybe I have been doing CSS and not even realizing it.
When I make the tables, it has the different things you can select for it like if you want borders, and all the other stuff like that.

It depends on the editor.  Some use HTML attributes to modify the look of page elements; others use CSS styling.  CSS is very powerful and should generally be used in preference to HTML attributes.

Oh and just now thought I'd see if maybe someone I know who is a computer programmer could look at some of my sites and help clear up any confusion. He said nothing at all is wrong with my codes and if anyone says anything about it doesn't know what they are talking about.

I'd be happy to give a second opinion, if you wish, but it's nice to have the comfort of a good review, isn't it!  :)

I've been trying to figure out if it's against the law to use tables.

Ha!  That's one of those "religious debates" in web design.  Frankly, some things are much easier to do - once - using tables.  The strength of CSS is that it's much easier to modify a page that uses complex CSS than a page that uses a complex table-based layout.  I think you have to remember that a lot of these guys who rant about CSS versus tables work in industries where collaboration is necessary and they all have to work in a standardised way.  This has an impact on the design decisions they make.  Using tables is not wrong (although often it's not the best way).

One final thought - if you want to design web sites using a WYSIWYG editor, then I would recommend using DreamWeaver (for better results than Word).  If you prefer to use a free web design package (because DreamWeaver is pricy, at least in the UK), I would suggest KompoZer.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for all the help you all are giving me. This helps clear some of the stuff up a bit.
Sure, here are some of the sites I have made. I actually have too many probably, but then as you can tell, I enjoy making sites for hobby though. Since I enjoy helping others out with anything and sharing pictures too, so far seems to be working. With all my sites I'll have a links page with just links to other sites.
With my disablilities, makes it hard for me to type and stuff for long, which is another big reason using all the things I've been using so far for making my sites seems to be working best. I also have noticed too in my guestbooks that so many out there do seem to like my sites alot. Anyways, here are some of my sites- my American Idol site- http://www.geocities.com/amymusicfan/ Which on that site- you will actually notice on the main page, there isn't a table there, but then if you go in the different seasons, you will see why I have table there for the layout for the columns I wanted to do.
Since I love movies alot, and I figure so many out there also enjoy movies, thought I'd create some- I've got more than 1 movie site. http://www.geocities.com/amylovesmovies/ http://www.geocities.com/moviefan756/
I have so many other sites too, but too many to list here.
Only other thing is Geocities is now going to be leaving, and I'm trying to figure out how to go about getting everything backed  properly.
One funny thing I noticed, I went to that validator site. I've never heard about it until a few months or so ago someone told me about that site. Which I'm trying to understand the errors too. But anyways, I typed in the url for one of my sites, and it came up with way less errors than the site I was working on for my sister and her husband,  which they now are paying someone who makes sites for a their job. Which the other thing I don't understand, it seems you have to use what the site gives you to use. The WYSIWYG editor thing on their site. Plus same as like our Bellsouth stuff which is our ISP and we have everything set up already.
See we login by opening our browser and going to the site and put in our name and password and it's got all the stuff there.

Thanks for the url for the Kompozer thing. It looks like this is just another browser? Is it not? Since I work on my pages using my mom's computer too, and she doesn't want me to put it on hers. Plus mine doesn't even have enough room for it. Ever since we switched from Earthlink Dialup to Bellsouth DSL, my computer the CPU usage keeps going up to 100% and locking up too. One of the things that makes it go to 100% is when I'm using sites like Webkinz and some of the games and stuff and I get a weird message about a movie playing in the background something from Adobe Flashplayer thing saying that. Also due to so much spyware and viruses, I haven't been using mine as much anymore, it's still sort of hooked up to the modem and router since it has to be for my mom's computer to get online, but not totally hooked up to internet. One of my brother-in-law's who knows alot on computers is currently trying to help out with the problems and as soon as he gets a chance do the Combofix log thing.
Last time he came over though, he installed so much things on both mine and mom's computer- Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, so many other stuff too.

KompoZer is a WYSIWYG editor for web pages, not a browser.  It will look similar to a browser but just with all the tools you need to edit pages before you upload them to a web server.

Some web services such as Geocities provide a service for you to "directly edit" pages hosted by them.  It's like a hosted web editor but gives you less direct control over the resulting page.  This is demonstrated by the fact that the source of the Geocities pages reveals certain things (javascript and images) added by Geocities, which you cannot remove.

As you say, this is the "hobbyist" end of web design.  For commercial web design, the process is more like this:

  • design graphics (e.g. using Macromedia Fireworks/Adobe Photoshop) and web pages (e.g. using Dreamweaver/Eclipse/KompoZer) on local computer
  • transfer (usually by FTP) HTML/PHP pages, images, external CSS and javascript files to a development web server
  • test web site
  • make required changes, re-upload, test again (repeat as required)
  • release web site (possibly by email, CD or FTP upload) to external testing agency, then repeat previous point
  • release web site (normally by FTP) to a live testing environment and test more thoroughly
  • relese web site (normally by FTP) to live environment

In a commercial/professional context, except in DIY cases, it would be extremely rare to see people using a web host's own page design tools and templates.

Just to make sure I'm not misunderstanding and that others are understanding all the software/programs and stuff we already have.
I'm noticing more and more too that sometimes it's hard to figure out how to word things especially when others aren't sitting here with me to see what all we have setup and all on our computers and Internet stuff we have.
First, I went to that backup site, and it looks like stuff we already have setup already in our modem settings and stuff like that? Is that not? The reason I'm asking is due to an email I got awhile back from Webkinz on a problem I keep having and I still haven't got it fixed or figure out what to do about it either. You wrote to us about not being able to connect to the server when trying to use the kinzchat phone or going into the clubhouse. This feature also affects the Tournament Arena and KinzPost. Please make sure that all of your pop up blockers are off. If you have a router, please make sure that the HTTP port 80 is open and the FTP port 21 is open. Then it mentions about if this doesn't fix the problem to contact your ISP to make sure the security settings on the modem are not set to high.
I tried to get help from our ISP on this stuff and they did not seem to even understand what the problem is. So, no help with them on how to check these settings at all.
The other thing, I went back to this site map to look at some stuff http://www.inmotionhosting.com/site_map.htmlhere that my sister and her husband are doing their site at. If I go to the tutorials section that they have on some of the stuff, it seems to be the same type of stuff WYSIWYG editor stuff. I looked again at the tutorial on their, and seems to be the exact same stuff that we already have setup for everything the internet and stuff. I looked at the video and it shows tasks I already know how to do with other things too like Microsoft Word.
Plus I noticed our email programs seem to all have that same type of editors in it too.
Anyways, I'm scared to change anything because it would affect my mom's stuff too. We have Bellsouth DSL setup already. My nephew and his dad came and set it all up for us. Since my nephew is really good with computer stuff better than his Dad is, he did the settings and his Dad did the wiring setting. The modem and router go from my computer to mom's and we have it doing Wired, not Wireless.
One of the things that didn't make sense either, one person said for a stylesheet to clear out all the default settings in the browser.  Which if you are using different computers to work on sites, how would doing this on one computer help if you are having to switch back and forth to edit your pages and then one computer might not have the same browsers as yours. So, is a reason I was wondering if the KompoZer is a browser due to the screen shots I saw.

Amy, I think we're going to get bogged down here, if we try and deal with more than your web design issues.  In respect of the WebKinz stuff you're talking about, you may wish to post that in the networking forum here, or somewhere more suited to that particular issue.  (I don't understand exactly what you're trying to do but maybe it has something to do with port forwarding?)

Back to your stylesheets question, the only issue as I see it is that external stylesheets are, like images, amongst the things that browsers remember (cache).  Browsers don't always notice that one of these cached items has changed - which can be a problem for a web developer trying to see her new web page through her browser's eyes.  Usually the problem is resolved by pressing Ctrl+F5 while using the browser.  This forces a complete reload of the page, retrieving all previously cached elements whether they've changed or not.

I hope that helps.

Oh Ok, that explains that they tell us to clear our cache out and stuff like that whenever having trouble viewing just any pages on the Internet? Like whenever things aren't viewing right, they say to clear the cache, cookies, history, all those things they say to do.
Whenever any sites out there have made changes, seems like I always also have to clear cache and all that stuff to be able to see the new stuff. Which I don't understand since it's not a page I created, a page someone else created, but we use the sites, like Webkinz is a site I use all the time. I know you don't know what Webkinz is, but we can make pages there too now, and it gives us so many other tools and stuff to build rooms and stuff for our pet and other things we had to buy and stuff and account to use the stuff we are doing on the site. So, like whenever Webkinz ads something new to the site, sometimes we have to clear all those things out to be able to do the new stuff they added. Like Games and other features they add.

Yes, but if it's not my website though is what I was trying to understand.
A site I did not create, but go to.
Here is what I'm talking about that happens:
If you have been told to clear your cache files and do not know how to do it, please look below to find your browser and then follow the instructions about how to clear your cache files. Please note: Dial-up users SHOULD NOT attempt to clear their cache as it may create complications when trying to log back into Webkinz World.

Sorry, but we aren't understanding this backup tool thing.
Before downloading it, trying to make sure maybe we don't already have something on our computers that will do it.
The reason I was asking about
router, please make sure that the HTTP port 80 is open and the FTP port 21 is open.
If you go to the page about this tool. It says Ftp settings and one of the things it lists is 21. Then it talks also about configuring directory and all this other stuff that I don't understand what they mean by all this. Trying to make sure it's not going to somehow mess up the Internet stuff. All this stuff reminded me of an email I got about settings and never got any help on how to do the stuff.
So, it looks like maybe the same type of things. I've got a screenshot of it, only other thing is I thought something on here would allow us to upload things so you all can see what I'm talking about, but now I don't see an upload thing anywhere in here.
Plus alot of the instructions on the site doesn't make much since too and talks about configuring things, so making sure this isn't something that mess my mom's stuff up either.
This one thing doesn't make much sense-
If you have not your account, go to www.geocities.com and register place for your website

Which doesn't everyone already have an account? In order to do the website in the first place you have to sign up for an account and then login and create the website.

Yes, the FTP port is 21.

Download the program from here, then follow these instructions:
- Open your Handy Backup
- On step 2 of New Item Wizard choose Add...->Ftp files...
- Set up your FTP access
- Your Host is ftp.geocities.com, username is your YahooID, and the password is your Yahoo password

I probably wasn't logged into where? The internet? We are logged on all the time because we have DSL.

Yes, the FTP port is 21.
Yes, but how do you make sure port 21 is open?
Or would it already be open all the time since we are online all the time since we don't have any dialup connection type of internet anymore. Just trying to make sure we will not be somehow messing something up by misunderstanding any instructions and then somehow messing up the whole Internet and not knowing what to do to fix anything and then having to call Bellsouth and not knowing what to tell them on what the problem is?

Port 21 is always open.

I don't understand then. If it is always open, why did instructions say to make sure it is open?

Are you sure it's free? When reading on the site, some stuff sounds like it's not free.
Here is something that one thing says:
# You can try Handy Backup Online 100 Mb account for 10 days for free.

It's free! The link I gave is a direct download link. You have to pay for an online account only if you want it.

Also, how do I check the FTP port settings? Can you please help me with that?

You don't need to check. Port 21 should always be open, so I don't know why they put that on the site.

Port 21 is always open on what?  On a router?  Nope.

Does a service need to be installed first?

This is making us(me and mom) wonder if this might not work right since port 21 has to be open. Due to another site, Webkinz that I use and some problems with the site not working right- in the instructions they sent back in an email, one was to make sure port 21 is open. They did not tell us how to check these settings though. So, we have not been able to do this step since we do not know how to do this.
Then at the end of the email says if this doesn't work to contact our ISP and make sure security settings on the modem are not set to high. Which since we haven't even checked the settings for the ports, have not called our ISP about this last step of what to do.

I think that issues about ports and port forwarding should be taken to the networking subforum.
