Scientists have warned politicians to take preventative action as a superstorm, dubbed the 'Big One', is expected to hit California.

Scientists warn of 'superstorm' heading for California
US Geological Survey scientists predict that the storm could last 40 days, producing up to 10-feet of rain and causing £190 billion ($300 billion) worth of flooding damage, which would make it the most destructive storm in California's modern history.

National Weather Service images show an atmospheric river system - a huge hose-like flow of Pacific Ocean moisture - moving onto the state increasing the risk of the winter weather phenomenon.

The storm scenario, combining prehistoric geologic flood history with modern flood mapping and climate-change projections, was released at an ARkStorm Summit in Sacramento, California last week.

The scenario suggests that a quarter of houses in the Golden State could be battered by flooding.

Weather experts say the statewide weather event, which strikes once every 100-200 years could bring an unprecedented scale of destruction. There is also a considerable risk of wind damage to the eastern part of the state, according to chief scientist Lucy Jones.

The last superstorm hit California between 1861 and 1862, but scientists predict that the threat of another one looms closer as weather patterns become more volatile, due to rising temperatures in the atmosphere.

US Geological Survey Director, Marcia McNutt said: "The time to begin taking action is now, before a devastating natural hazard event occurs. This scenario demonstrates firsthand how science can be the foundation to help build safer communities. The ARkStorm scenario is a scientifically vetted tool that emergency responders, elected officials and the general public can use to plan for a major catastrophic event to help prevent a hazard from becoming a disaster."

Jones added: "This is not just a Californian problem. There will be disruption to ports and transportation systems. The economic impact will be felt across the country."

"For a storm which can cause four times as much damage as earthquakes, Californians are less aware of risks they face from floods."

Federal and state emergency management officials met last week to discuss emergency preparations for possible superstorms.

What did that mean? Perhaps he was thinking about all the Californiass who gamble in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the storm, many will be without money. That would further weaken the economy of Nevada.

10 years ago supposedly Vancouver Island was supposed to sink Due to a super mega earthquake.

Needless to say it didn't. There have been a few relatively mild earthquakes but nothing too serious.

So "expected to" means "may or may not happen at some undetermined and impossible to predict time in the future" which is not very helpful. That would be like meteorologists saying "it may rain at some point in the future on a day that is yet to be known". It's vague and nondescript, and when you use something like that in conjunction with the word "disaster" you're just fear-mongering.

If we just assume stuff is true because it has far reaching consequences then we may as well forget anything logical and go back to living in caves and worshipping the sun, because the local shaman says if we don't then it will stop rising, and if that is true, people are in for a lot of trouble.

Even Blizzards - World of Warcraft in game Calendar ends January 2012. So maybe then in January 2012 there will be the real world cataclysm, so no need to extend a virtual cataclysm..lol

Do you really need an explanation as to how a storm like the one mentioned in the article would cause an economic impact across the entire country if it ever happened?

You can't fix Stupid!!!

That has nothing do do with what he said.

neither does that. And there isn't a moving lake in Australia from what I can tell.

Rural Australian towns are bracing themselves for another week of flooding as a vast 'lake' continues to spread across the country's southeast.

Australia braces itself for more flooding

Weather reports suggest a potential tropical cyclone is also threatening the northeast of the country.

Flooding began more than a month ago in Australia's northeast Queensland state, where 30 people have died, more than 30,000 homes have been damaged and crops and coal exports lost.

Record rains have now shifted the flood emergency focus to the southeast Victoria state, which is usually parched during the southern summer.

A lake resembling an inland sea, 55 miles long and 25 miles wide northwest of the Victorian capital of Melbourne, will continue making it's way inland until it spills into the Murray River.

Residents have been sandbagging furiously as the Lodden, Avoca and Murray Rivers all converge at Swan Hill.

The city continues to clear up the devastation left by the flood waters as the search for victims goes on.

no matter how high flood waters get, calling it a "lake" is merely a metaphor.
