    The Invalid function message
    « on: November 30, 2019, 12:56:49 PM »
    Hello

    I've set up a machine running original MS-DOS 6.22. When I try to make my CD ROM drive work it's ok but trying to list files on a CD with "dir" command brings the "Invalid function" message.
    The strange thing is when I use MS-DOS 6.22 bootdisk with the same drivers then everything is alright and I can access this drive.

        Unfortunately there's nothing about my problem in your link.

        Hi

        Do you have in the config.sys file
        files=30
        Buffers = 20

        Here is a link to common config.sys and autoexec.bat files for dos https://www.computerhope.com/ac.htm

        If adding those 2 commands doesn't fix it then check you are not loading the cdrom commands into high memory with the LH and devicehigh command. Just use load and device until it is working.
        If you want you could copy the config.sys and Autoexec.bat files here for us to check

          Yes I have this two lines in my config.sys file.
          I tried to load drivers into conventional memory but it didn't help unfortunetaly.

          These are my current files:

          Is the DVD drive Sata or IDE, And does the cd1.sys file support DVD  drives. Also are you using any adapters between the motherboard and the dvd drive, perhaps an IDE to sata adapter. You say the dos 6.22 disk works .
          You could rename Autoexec.bat and config.sys then boot from the 6.22 disk and copy the config.sys and autoexec.bat files from the disk to the hard drive and test the computer boots and reads disks. Then add in the emm386 lines extra until it stops working.

          The last line in the config sys is likely the culprit...

            The DVD drive is IDE and CD1.SYS works with it when running from bootdisk. There are no adapters.

              And why is that?

                So I decided to install MS-DOS once again and it works now but:
                1. Only if I never add LH or DEVICEHIGH before drivers, otherwise it won't work even if I remove it later which is not understandable for me at all.
                2. Without LH and DEVICEHIGH some programs don't work because they're too big to fit into memory.

                So  :-\.

                infiniteness84,
                MS-DOS is no longer supported by Microsoft.

                  So?
                  Can't people use it as a hobby? I don't believe everyone had this problem with cd drives and this topic is exactly about it.
