Windows xp, sp3, hp desktop. Norton 360 installed.  Every time I boot up, I get this popup in the bottom right courner telling me Windows has found new hardware. Then it tries to install the driver. I get a message that installation has failed because the software already exist.  It does, keyboard works fine.  I think it started when I tried updating the driver.

    Go to Device Manager...
Right clik the keyboard and select uninstall/remove...
    Re-boot.

I tried uninstalling as you suggested but it didn't work.  I unplugged the keyboard and rebooted the tried uninstalling it.  Turned the computer off, then plugged the keybd back in and rebooted.  I still got the message that there was a problem, etc. but keybd worked. I think I should shoot the darn thing and go skiing.

What do you mean you "tried" updating the driver? What exactly happened?

He's running Norton 360 and that wouldn't cause this problem anyway.

^^ Actually, just to politely correct you, Norton products have a tendency to lock system changes in place. So, if there was an error in the hardware on reboot, and the driver corrupted, then Norton would not recognize it. Then, when Windows starts, the Found New Hardware wizard would continually start up, because the driver installed was then uninstalled by Norton on reboot. This is to make sure that malware does not try to install a driver, such as TDSS or Skynet, etc.

Here would be a few examples:
        http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-32903-i-cannot-viw-my-cd-rom-dvd-drive#3
        http://kb.drivershq.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50055.aspx
        http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-239376-2nd-drive-access-issue-after-norton-install

As you can see, Norton products typically have unpredictable behaviors on a system.

Does it do the same thing booting to Safe mode ? ?
If not boot to safe mode and uninstall Norton...you can always reinstall it...
Again remove the keyboard in Device Manager as stated above and re-boot.

Well, SONAR does not really decide on whether or not the installs are bad, but decides on behavior. So, if a driver gets installed using an automated process, SONAR will detect it as a driver install, and reverse it.

Now, the install can be done in Safe Mode, but must be as an Administrator. Norton's products do not need uninstalled, but any serious system changes must be done in Safe Mode due to Norton's SONAR behavior detection component.

Otherwise, to do it in Normal Mode, you would first have to disable protection/exit Norton's products, then disable Norton's Non-Plug-And-Play driver(s). And then try the driver install.

What does SONAR have to do with it...and wouldn't uninstalling Norton and re-installing be easier? ? ?

I said what it had to do with it: "Well, SONAR does not really decide on whether or not the installs are bad, but decides on behavior. So, if a driver gets installed using an automated process, SONAR will detect it as a driver install, and reverse it. "

Not only that, Norton products are hard to uninstall, and it takes too long. It is easier to disable a couple of drivers, and protection, than to go through the installation process.

        Got it...
Was un-familiar with Sonar as the last Norton app that got within 3 blocks of any of my machines was before Peter sold the business...
