How to switch to the Dvorak computer keyboard layout

To change to the Dvorak keyboard layout and are using Windows, you can follow the steps below.

Tip

Even if your keyboard is QWERTY, you can still use the Dvorak layout, although it may be more difficult to use.

Windows 8, 10, and 11

To change to the Dvorak keyboard layout or another keyboard layout in Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11, you'll need to install a new layout. For further assistance, see the following page:

Windows Vista, 7, and earlier

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Under the Clock, Language, and Region section, click Change keyboards or other input methods.
  3. Click the Change keyboards button.
  4. Click Add and select one of the Dvorak keyboards. If you want an English Dvorak layout, scroll down to English and select Dvorak, Dvorak for left hand, or Dvorak for right hand, depending on your preference.
