.SWP With Windows a .SWP is an extension used for the Windows swap file usually win386.swp. This file is required by Windows and can grow large in size sometimes up to several hundred megabytes. This file is used to swap information between currently running programs and memory. If this file is deleted from the computer Windows, it prevents Windows from loading and would require a reinstall.

In Linux and with the VIM editor the .swp file extension is a temporary save for a file currently being edited. This file should be deleted automatically when the file is closed in VIM.
