POE

POE may refer to any of the following:

1. POE, point of entry, or entry point describes how a virus enters a computer. The POE can happen through a web page, e-mail, or software where a link, prompt, or attachment is opened and introduces the malware into the computer. The hacker may gain partial or full access to the user's computer or network, depending on the hacker's intent.

2. POE refers to Power over Ethernet, a technology that allows an Ethernet network cable to also carry electrical power. For example, a security camera requires a power cable and a data cable (if not wireless). However, if the security camera supports POE, it can get power and transmit data all over one Ethernet cable.

It's easier to install a POE device for locations without a close power connection because it doesn't require a new power wire to be installed.

To utilize POE, the network needs either a POE network switch or a POE injector. This switch and injector are what allow a power signal to transmit over Ethernet. When a POE device connects to a network with either a POE switch or POE injector, the power automatically begins being transmitted over the Ethernet wire.
