Why is McAfee on my computer?

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) computers, such as those produced by Dell and HP (Hewlett-Packard), come pre-loaded with many programs, including some from McAfee. The developer pays the manufacturer a small fee for each device their programs are installed on, thus reducing the overall cost of the computer.

For example, Dell may receive $10 for each program loaded on their computers. If multiple programs are installed by different developers, the cost of a computer can be significantly reduced and make it more compelling to someone looking for a more affordable machine.

Unfortunately, as this software is installed by default, it consumes available hard drive space, and may be unnecessary, which is why it's often called bloatware. However, it can be uninstalled at a user's discretion.

Do I need to have McAfee software installed?

Microsoft Defender

No. A user doesn't need any McAfee software installed on their computer. If they choose to uninstall it, Windows Defender keeps the computer protected.

Is it unsafe to uninstall McAfee software?

There are no risks to uninstalling McAfee, and it would only be unsafe to remove it if no other protection software is installed. However, the latest versions of Windows include Windows Defender to protect against viruses and other malware and Windows Firewall for network security. When Windows detects McAfee is uninstalled, those two security programs are automatically enabled.

Note

Many people prefer to have McAfee uninstalled because the solutions included with Windows are free, requiring no subscriptions, and are non-intrusive.

How do I uninstall McAfee from the computer?

McAfee can be uninstalled from a Windows computer, like any other piece of software. For help with uninstalling software, see the following link:

How to prevent McAfee from getting installed

Using the manufacturer's software to restore your computer always re-installs McAfee and other software and cannot be prevented. However, after the computer is restored, it can be uninstalled again.

If you're looking to buy a new computer and want to ensure it doesn't include software like McAfee, make sure it's advertised as a Signature PC (like the Microsoft Surface). Alternatively, you can build or purchase a custom-built computer and only install Windows on the computer, or get an Apple computer as they never include McAfee.
