Exclusive game

XBox, PlayStation and a gaming computer.

With software development, an exclusive game is a game created, released, and restricted to playing on a particular gaming console, PC platform, or digital distribution service. Companies like Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo often utilize exclusive games as a strategic tool to encourage gamers to choose their platform over the competition. For example, if your friends play a game that's only available for a specific platform, it may be enough for you to choose that platform.

Also called platform exclusivity, this concept is usually implemented to boost hardware or software sales and create a competitive advantage. An exclusive title may have optimization benefits (e.g., better frame rates) but is generally frustrating to gamers who want to play a game but do not own the necessary hardware or service.

Tip

Many popular console exclusive games eventually come out for the PC, but it may be years after it is released.
