Short for K Desktop Environment, KDE is an open-source desktop environment used with Unix workstations; started as a software project by Matthias Ettrich in 1996. KDE has become a popular GUI (graphical user interface) and is included with many variants of Linux, BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), and Solaris.
