Adobe Photoshop

Add Noise or Photoshop Add Noise adds random pixels or grain. Its parameters are amount (percentage), distribution (uniform or Gaussian), and monochromatic or not. Uniform noise looks like grain, while Gaussian noise looks more speckled.

Adding noise can make photos look more realistic if the camera's algorithm removes too much, making the picture look plastic. It can make portraits seem more focused and real.

Adding noise helps remove banding in feathered images by making the image more uniform and cohesive.

Add Noise works on 8 Bit, 16 Bit, 32 Bit, RGB (red, green, and blue), grayscale, CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and key), and Multichannel images, and Smart Objects. This filter launches another window with options.

Add Noise is part of Adobe Photoshop's Extended Filters.
