A search key may refer to any of the following:

Search key1. On a Google Chromebook, the Search key is a replacement for the Caps Lock key on traditional PC and Mac computer keyboards. As can be seen in the picture to the right the Chromebook Search Key is a magnifying glass and when pressed opens a search for the web and your apps and the same time.

To turn Caps Lock on and off on a Google Chromebook press the Alt key and Search Key at the same time.

2. A search key is a string or other data that is used as input for searching a database, search engine, or script. For example, with the below URL "q=example+search" is the search key that is being used with the search.cgi script on Computer Hope to search for "example search."
