Sometimes abbreviated as an expansion or XPAC, an expansion pack is software that adds to the original content of a game. They are useful for adding life to older games that may have gotten stale over the years. An expansion pack may add new areas to explore, creatures, challenges, items, and weapons. Because of how much content is included in expansion packs, they're rarely free but are never as expensive as the original game.

An example of a game with many expansion packs is World of WarCraft. Released in 2004, it has nine expansions; the latest is called Dragonflight (pictured); it came out in 2022. These expansions have added new locations, classes, races, weapons, gear, and other items to the game and have allowed it to remain popular for over 18 years.

How do I get an expansion pack?

An expansion pack can be purchased from the same digital distribution platform as where the game was purchased or, sometimes, in the game itself.

Do all games have expansion packs?

No. Not all game developers have the resources to release an expansion pack. Sometimes, the community may release unofficial expansion packs, more appropriately called a mod, to help extend the life of a game.

Does an expansion pack require the original game?

Yes. To play an expansion pack, you must have purchased the original game. An expansion pack cannot run by itself.

Can I pay with people who have not purchased an expansion pack?

Most games allow players to group with others who don't have the newest expansion pack. However, any new areas introduced with an expansion cannot be accessed by those without the latest expansion pack. Also, new items may not appear or may be locked.
