Sleeper PC

Updated: 06/16/2026 by Computer Hope

A sleeper PC is a computer with modern hardware housed in an older computer case or another unexpected container. The term "sleeper" is used because the computer's true capabilities are hidden or "asleep" beneath an unassuming exterior. Computer enthusiasts build sleeper computers for the challenge and the opportunity to come up with ideas for problems like finding space for modern video cards, cable management, and cooling. It's also rewarding to surprise others at computer events like a LAN party, where others initially believe you're using a computer from the 1990s until they see you playing a modern game.

Building a sleeper PC requires more research and creativity than assembling a modern computer, but many find the process rewarding and consider it the best way to create a unique computer. Some might build a sleeper build to help hide higher-end hardware from thieves or other players.

Note

A sleeper PC may also be called an incognito PC, sleeper build, sleeper computer, or stealth PC.

Note

A sleeper PC is not the same as a retro computer.

Should I add a window to my sleeper PC?

When building a sleeper PC, there are no rules to what you can or cannot do. However, many argue that a window showing the inside of the case doesn't hide its true hardware and therefore doesn't make it a sleeper PC.
