Person using a computer to write a blog.

A weblog or blog chronologically lists text, images, or other objects and started appearing online in 1998. Blogs are often maintained and run by a single individual, updated daily, or contain personal remarks about a topic, a personal ramble, or an update on the person's life. Weblogs are like a personal journal (cyberjournal), offering users a way to discuss their lives publicly. It provides a personal way to learn more about people, events, places, and people around the world.

Examples of software and services for creating and starting personal weblogs include Blogger, Movable Type, LiveJournal, Typepad, and WordPress.

Should my business or personal website have a blog?

Many people believe creating a blog on their website is an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy. While it's true more content can improve a website's search engine rankings, that content must be quality content and updated frequently. Unfortunately, most people who create a blog only for SEO reasons rarely update it (e.g., haven't updated it in years) or make short posts about a topic no one is interested in reading. If you plan on creating a blog, ensure it's updated at least once a month and the posts are interesting, helpful, and well-written.
