H may refer to any of the following:

1. The letter "h" is chat slang for "how." For example, "h2" in chat is short for "how to."

2. H is a keyboard key used with the keyboard shortcuts Alt+H, Command+H, and Ctrl+H.

3. With Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet programs, "H" is the eighth column of a spreadsheet. To reference the first cell in the column, you'd use "H1."

4. In Adobe Photoshop, H is a shortcut to select the Hand tool.

5. With a measurement or in a 3D environment, H is short for height.

6. When dealing with an electrical measurement, H is short for henry.

7. With time notations, the lowercase h is for an hour. For example, with a long time it may be formatted as "h:mm:ss tt," which is the same as "hour:minutes:seconds AM/PM."

8. With Microsoft Narrator, pressing the "H" key navigates to the next heading.

9. The lowercase h is the SI-derived symbol of hecto.

10. In the phonetic alphabet, "H" is often pronounced as "hotel."

11. H is the eighth letter of the English alphabet. The letter "H" comes after "G" and is followed by the letter "I." To create a capitalized "H," press Shift and H at the same time.

With U.S. QWERTY keyboards, the "H" key is on the home row, to the right of the "G" and left of the "J" key. See our keyboard page for a visual example of all keyboard keys.

Note

If the "H" key is not working on the keyboard, see: Some keys on my computer keyboard aren't working.

Tip

In ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), the uppercase "H" is "072" in decimal (01001000 in binary). The lowercase "h" is "104" in decimal (01101000 in binary).

Tip

Doing the Alt code Alt+72 creates a capital "H" and Alt+104 creates a lowercase "h" character.

Tip

The number 4 on a phone keypad creates an "H" on a US phone.
